I went to Tire on advice of my travel agent. He was right. Tire is a very pleasant town, at a bit over an hour’s bus ride from Izmir, even shorter from Selçuk. I was wrong however expecting very ancient remains, like I saw the day before in Sart (Sardis). My mistake, I had confused the age-old Tyre in the Lebanon with this place. I am a bit weak in the geography department. So no Roman, let alone Phoenician temples, but lots of mosques (I think people told me there were some 28 in the old town), and pleasant neighbourhoods with sometimes wildly coloured houses. Friendly people as always, some good views over the fertile plain. They grow hemp here, but not the one you’ll find in “my” Amsterdam coffee shops. Tire was the hawser (ropes for the fleet) capital of the Ottoman empire. They also make felt ware, and quilts, clogs, mats and saddles. Part of this is sold in the narrow streets in the centre. In 2011 I returned, enjoyed myself greatly and found the museum open. In 2022 I edit the gallery, putting mosques together. Texts describing a walk through town may become silly. I identified almost every sight using an excellent site (in Turkish) of important spots in the Izmir province. I also found many sights, such as hans and some mosques, have been restored, where I took pictures in a much poorer state.

Seyahat acentemin önerisi üzerine Tire’ye gittim. Haklıydı.Tire çok hoş bir yer, Izmir’den bir saatten biraz daha fazla sürüyor. Yine de bir gün önce Sart’ta (Sart (Sardis)) gördüğüme benzer çok eski kalıntılar bulacağımı umarak hata yapmıştım. Lübnan’daki daha eski Tire’yle buradaki Tire’yi karıştırmıştım. Coğrafya bilgim biraz zayıf.

Fenike’yi bir kenara bırakın, Roma tapınakları bile yoktu. Ama birçok cami (sanırım insanlar 28 tane cami olduğunu söylemişlerdi) ve bazılarında delice boyanmış evlerin olduğu hoş mahalleler vardı. İnsanlar her zaman olduğu gibi canayakındı. Bereketli ovanın üzerinden görünen kimi hoş manzaralar vardı. Burada kenevir yetiştiriyorlar, ama “bizim” Amsterdam’daki kafelerde bulabileceğiniz türdekilerden değil. Tire, Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun halat başkentiydi. Orada ayrıca keçe eşya ve yorgan, takunya, paspas ve eyer de üretiliyor. Bunların bir bölümü Tire’nin merkezinin dar sokaklarında satılıyor. Türkçe çeviri: Melek Emir.
