The Sokollu Mehmet Paşa mosque, which is a jewel with its fine Iznik tiles from the best period. It is by Sinan, built in 1571-1572. It was built in memory of Esmahan Sultan, a daughter of Selim II and Grand Vezir Sokollu Mehmet Paşa's wife.
It was built on the site of an ancient church, the “Strolling Through Istanbul” guidebook tells us its columns were used in the mosque’s courtyard.
Hello, wonderful pictures. One of them (445) belongs to Kücük Ayasofya, though.
What I always wanted to say: dear Mr Osseman, it is always very exciting to look at your fotos, and sometimes I suspect we could have met (for example in Tire, where you took almost the same pictures of the very same maker of donkey saddles as I did).
So, thank you very much, not just for the images but also for the very well ordered site you made of them.
With best regards and wishes, hope to meet you some time in Turkey
