Muş is a small city on the road from Bingöl to the Van Lake. My travel agent congratulated me when I bought my ticket: he's been in the business for tens of years, but never before had anyone bought a ticket to Muş. According to Armenian lore it was founded in the 6th century by Mushegh Mamikonian and he and the Bagratids fought over its possession. Later it became the capital of the Taron kingdom, to be handed over to the Byzantines in 966. After the defeat of Manzikert (present Malazgirt) the Selcuks took over, later the Mongols (1260 and end olf the 14th century). In 1515 Selikm Yavuz added it to the Ottoman empire. During WW I the Russians held it till 1917. In 1966 a severe earthquake caused much damage. I won't advise you all to go there, there is not very much to see or do. However, the city has three decent mosques and a old part that is not large, but makes for some nice walks. And one draws a lot of attention. I made a walk up the hill in the back of the city and had some nice views on Muş itself and the plain in front. I later walked that plain a bit: seems very fertile to me, it made for a pleasant outing. I returned in September 2006 and liked it again. So much so, that in September 2012 I was there again. That time I took many pictures of the kids, I promised them they'd find them on this site, and kept my promise. I have even been here in 2010 also, but just used the town as a base camp for other destinations.

MUŞ

Muş, Bingöl’le Van Gölü arasındaki yolun üzerinde küçük bir şehir. Biletimi aldığımda seyahat acentacım beni tebrik etti. Onlarca yıldır bu işte olmasına rağmen, daha önce hiç kimse Muş’a bilet almamış.
