Kilims used in mosques

Up to the 1980s, it was common to see the floor of mosques in the Anatolian interior covered with a large range of (mostly local) kilims and knotted carpets. They were a gift from people attending worship services at these houses of prayer; an old tradition that turned some mosques into regional carpet museums. During the last decades, the kilims and carpets were largely replaced by uniform factory work, the old and valuable rugs being brought to museums, and some other pieces finding their way into the antiques business.
