A Kurdish lady making some speech or public announcement. She wears a traditional festive dress, displaying the national Kurdish colours (green, yellow, red). The piercing in her nose is not a modern-style piece of jewelry, but an old tradition from East-Anatolia, called 'Xizêm' in Kurdish, and ‘hızma’ in Turkish.
She wears an old-style (pale yellow) garment with sleeves ending in long lappets. During daily work these are winded up around the upper arms, in order to protect the (more expensive) upper dress. On festive occasions, the wrapping is incomplete, leaving the lappets’ ends free.
