Ottoman miniature depicting a seated sultan.
Very similar to a portrait of sultan Suleiman the Magnificent (1494-1566) as a young man.
That miniature (kept in the Topkapı Palace) was painted by Nakkaş ‘Osman, for the ‘Şemailname’ of Loqman (datable c. 1579).
Similarities: same general composition, same costume and turban, same pose, very resembling face.
The ‘Şemailname’ is a book of portraits (from sultans and other persons), commissioned by Murad III.
Seyyid Loqman was the head annalist (‘şehnameci’), and Nakkaş ‘Osman the head miniaturist of the ‘nakkaşhane’ (= imperial workshop for miniatures) at that time. To garantee that the likenesses were good, they looked for and obtained even European portraits.
