A notice explains that the town dates back to the Palaeolithic age, naming some fourteen peoples that lived here. In the 17th through 19th century it reached its greatest wealth. Some 1000 houses and other monuments remain and are in an often very good state of restoration. In 1994 it was put on the UNESCO Global Heritage list.
