The Agora was the largest of its kind in the world. It was established in 333 BC by Alexander the Great on the slopes of Mt. Pagos.

When I returned in March 2007 some replicas of columns or at least the bottom part of them had been installed. As had one gate (with money from the Chamber of Commerce, in 2004). The marble used was the same (from Proconnesos) as was used in the original building. A female portrait, identified as Faustina, wife of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, adorns the keystone. After an earthquake in 178 AD caused great destruction the emperor had funded reconstruction works.
