Close-up of the painted decor of a Clazomenae sarcophagus.

Clazomenae is an ancient Ionian Greek city, located about 30 km west of Izmir (Smyrna). The city was founded on the mainland near the base of the Erythraean peninsula; it became part of the Ionian Dodecapolis and was well known for its painted terracotta sarcophagi (7th and first half of the 6th century BC).
