This is the Muradiye mosque, by the greatest Turkish architect, Sinan. It is one of his last works, from 1582-1585, who built it for Murat III.

On the picture: To the left: the minber (pulpit from where the ‘Friday sermon’ is given during the most important common prayer of Islamic week).
In the center: some pillars of the platform for the singers.
To the right, over the entrance door: the platform were women take place if they want to participate in the common prayer.

The presence of such a platform in a mosque is not compulsory. The only separation between men and women is during prayers when women must stand behind the men. The platform makes things only somewhat easier (for men); the women being completely invisible for people downstairs, men will no longer be tempted to secretly peep backwards, and so will stay well focused on the ritual.
