And then I went on one of my usual rambles through side street upon side street, leading me to some poorer regions, later back into town. The houses in town are often neglected, but some are reminiscent of a better age (late 19th, early 20th century I would guess).

Not only the streets but also cities nearby borders between Bulgaria, Greece were neglected. Personally I believe that this shows the bad governance of the country. Also it implies to me the strategic military planning against a possible invasion of the Soviet-influenced Bulgarian regime or German-occupied Greece regime of the 1940s.
