Kars 3768.jpg

view map

Kars has many buildings in a style that to my eyes is different to the one I see elsewhere in the country. I have seen similar buildings in Edirne at the other side of the country. They are often painted in wonderful colours and I hope they will not perish in the "lets go modern" craze.

I have been informed about half of the houses in this series are in Greek style. That leaves me with the question: what is the style of the other half? And: Might there not be an international style at the time the houses were built? So that both Russians and others might build similarly.

Yes Dick, these are Russian houses (like in Moscow). The little roof over the entry (to protect the guest from the snow) gives it away. Read Orhan Pamuk's "Snow" ....

Kars is a very curious town.
