This monument is where Kara Mursel Bey is supposedly buried. Kara Mursel Bey was the first commander of the navy of the Ottoman Empire. He ordered a shipyard to be built here (finished in 1327), and I understood from the Turkish Wikipedia that a type of small ships built here was even called Karamürsel.
