The mosque was built after the earthquake in Malatya on March 3, 1894 severely damaged the Hacı Yusuf Taş Mosque, it is called the Yeni Cami or New Mosque, part (or maybe all) financed by Sultan Abdülhamit II who sent ten thousand gold coins.
Malatya kent merkezinde bulunan cami, 1912 yılında Mustafaoğlu Yusuf tarafından kesme taştan yapılmış olup, büyük bir kubbeyle kaplıdır. Güney duvarının her iki yanında ikişer şerefeli 2 minare bulunmaktadır.
which in my mind means that the mosque was built in 1912 on behalf of Mustafaoğlu Yusuf. From another source I understand it was built to replace an earlier mosque (Büyük Zelzele) that was destroyed in an earthquake on 3rd of March 1894. So I do think it was a mosque from the start. I agree about the stylistic similarities.

Is it just visual resemblance, or this mosque really is a byzantine church? Typical dome drums, an apse, 1 large dome (Christ) & 4 smaller ones (4 evangelists). When was this mosque built?

This Mosque located in the center of Malatya has an uncompleted minaret in original. This last year (2005) it had a resroration. As far as i know, limestone is used for construction. In 2006, buildings aroun it were demolished to give a better view.
