Kayseri Dec2005 008

İbrahim Tennuri Camii ve Çeşmesi.

When exactly this ‘İbrahim Tennuri Camii’, also named ‘Şeyh Camii’ (Mosque of the Sheikh) was built is not certain; some historians say 1466, by Şeyh Ibrahim himself - some others say in 1576 by Şeyh Abdürrahim Efendi. The second date could also be a rebuilt or restoration. Anyway, Şeyh Ibrahim’s tomb, which is adjacent to the mosque, is from 1482.

İbrahim Tennuri was a Sufi, from the Bayramiye Order (founded by Hacı Bayram from Ankara). He became close to Akşemseddin, the teacher and Şeyh ul-Islâm of sultan Mehmed II, and so became a confidant of the sultan himself. Akşemseddin sent Şeyh Ibrahim to Kayseri as his and sultan Mehmed’s representative, where he founded a tekke (dervish house) and became quite famous as an islamic scholar, philosopher and poet.

Dear Dick, My childhood passed arround this places. The fountain on this picture, was right in front of the mosque in 1978. The stones were numbered one by one and the fountain was rebuilt in its current place. There were beautifull Armenian houses nearby. But were all demolished because of commercial matters. Thanks for sharing these beautiful pictures.
