A notice explains the first walls may have been erected by the Gasga, later the Miletans expanded them. in 770 BC. The present circuit dates from 100 BC and was built on the orders of King Mithridates the Great. The Romans, Byzantines, Seljuk and Ottomans kept it in repair and fortified it. They are 2053 meters long, 3 meters thick, 25 to 30 meters high, with numerous towers and seven gates.
