Ephebe

view map

This statue of an ephebe (young boy, in this case estimated at the age of 12) once decorated a gymnasium, he is relaxing from excercises, has a tunic to prevent him from catching a cold, and a mantle of a type used by shepherds. The catalogue has it “this head is unequalled by any other head of antiquity so far discovered” and indeed is very well done. Swollen ears indicate he was a wrestler. It is from the late first century BC or early first century AD. Light conditions were very difficult. Will try again at some time (now having a 70-200 VR at my disposal).
