Sivas museum

view map

The museum's main attraction is that it houses the original (class)room where a congress was held on 4 September 1919 in the local high school. It has some other stuff of minor importance (like some woodwork, for instance a minber (pulpit) from the Divrigi Kale Mosque from the thirteenth century).

In the Amasya Circular (signed by Atatürk, members of his staff and for instance Bele Refet, commander of the Turkish forces) the need for a "national body" had been expressed. A national congress in Sivas was announced, and invited three delegates from every administrative district to travel to Sivas in secret. The Eastern provinces had earlier convened at the Erzurum congress on the tenth of July. The rest you can look up yourself in Andrew Mango’s biography of Atatürk or another source.

This is the classroom, with pictures on each desk of who-sat-where. The mask is Atatürk's.
