Sivas Ulu or Great Mosque

view map

The Ulu Camii or Great Mosque is from 1197, the minaret is from 1213 and seems to have had its axis adjusted when it started to topple, it changes direction halfway up.

The mosque is of an old but not very interesting type: just a large room with row upon row of pillars to support a flat roof.

Note the coffin in the centre: when a person dies he will be buried "from the mosque", after a service inside the mosque, where the coffin is not present (compare the Christian style of burial, bringing the coffin inside the church). Thereafter the coffin is hoisted on a car, or carried on the shoulders of some men, and brought to the graveyard.
