Tokat Ornament

view map

This picture and the previous and / or next ones were taken in a region behind the central square, going up-hill, where the old road pattern is very outspoken and the houses have some extra charm. This dog, chained to a cypress, decorates the upper left corner of the portal building, that belongs to the Paşa Han, at the end of Sulusokak (Sulu street). The upper right corner has a chained lion on it, with a similar cypress to its left side. Therefore it is also called ‘Aslanlı Han’ (= Han with the Lion).
As the rest of the Paşa Han (built 1752) is in a pretty bad shape, the well conserved portal building has been used as a shop for the last decades. Reportedly this Ottoman caravanserai is to be restored, and should become a tourist hotel with 90 rooms.
