Tokat Ulu Mosque

view map

This Ulu (or Great) Mosque was under restoration in 2002, but has been finished. The whole neighbourhood is getting a face-lift.

The Ulu Cami (or: Camii Kebir) was built in 1678, to replace an older one that had become unusable.
It has no central dome, but is covered with six little flat domes, in the style of the (much older, and much bigger) Ulu Cami of Bursa.

The floor of the prayer hall is covered with all kinds of carpets and rugs, different in size and design, both handmade or modern factory work. Mostly Turkish, but not all: some pieces have a Central Asian design.
They are a gift from people attending worship services at this mosque. An old tradition, that turns some old mosques into local carpet museums.
