Perge gate

view map

The Hellenistic Gate (the cylindrical towers you see) was being restored in 2012, one of its towers covered with scaffolding. It had three entrances, located at the east, west and south side. The south gate had a yard in its front. It dates back to the second century BC. During Hadrian’s time a triumphal arch was constructed. The yard became theHonour Yard in 121 AD. The walls seem to have been covered with coloured marble at that time, with columns adorning the façade. In niches statues were displayed. A woman, Plancia Magna, became very important at that time as an administrator of the city, priestess of Arftemis and of the Imperial Cult. The grateful people honoured her with statues all over town, now to be seen in the Antalya Museum (see my gallery).

One of some scans made in 2018 of slides I made in 1992, it is the only one where the scaffolding that later was erected on the right hand tower is lacking.
