Selcuk Kushadasi

view map

The first time I entered Kushadasi I heard a row in Dutch, in "my" Amsterdam accent. I felt like turning back. I don't like this place, but then, I don't like any place where tourism takes over and sets the pace.

One of some slides from my early visits (1992 or 1996) that I scanned and edited in 2018. By now the centre of Amsterdam - where I live - has been taken over by tourism too, I have nowhere to flee.

This is the harbour.

Dear Mr. Osseman

I can not agree with you more when you say that you don't like any place where the tourism takes over. This is my biggest fear relating with Turkey that over time tourism will take over the place and the othantic local cuisine will leave its place to hamburgers and pizzas, the local people who are modest, hospitable, and warm-hearted will leave their place to greed, and this amazing culture will leave its colors to nothing. This really frustrates me. This is exactly what happened to Kusadasi. It was my lovely little town 15 years ago with peach trees. I went back in 2005 again and was very dismayed and saddened by how it grew to be this messy ugly city. Very sad.
