Like many Turkish cities Kastamonu has a Kale or fortress, at the top of a hill. Like its brothers elsewhere it dates back ages, and has regularly been adapted to modern warfare. It can be climbed easily, on the way up (well, you can do it by car, and as usual then the road is a bit more dull) you pass through neighbourhoods with old houses and friendly people. From the top you have splendid views over the city and the surrounding country.
