Amasya the Ataturk monument

view map

Regarding Amasya, Atatürk and the rise of the Turkish Republic:

On 30 April 1919, Mustafa Kemal Paşa (the future Atatürk), aged almost 38, general and Turkish hero of the First World War, was assigned as inspector of the Ninth Army Troops Inspectorate to reorganize what remained of the Ottoman military units and to improve internal security. This assignment occurred in Istanbul, which he soon after left by ship. On 19 May 1919, he reached Samsun. His first goal was the establishment of an organized national movement against the occupying allied forces. Mid June 1919, together with three of his earliest associates, he issued the Amasya Circular (letter), declaring the independence of the country was in danger. This first formal action would lead to the National Congresses of Erzurum (July/August 1919) and Sivas (September 1919), and ultimately to the establishment of the Turkish Republic.

The Atatürk Monument commemorates this ‘Amasya Circular’, in a somewhat allegoric form. So, half of the represented people were not really present at the actual event.
The sculpture group was made in 1981, designed by the Turkish sculptor Prof. Dr. Tankut Öktem (1940-2007).

i wrote a comment but can't add here...it was about the monument...so write again:)
first, thanks and congratulations for pics...they're really so special and precious for me...i'm an amasya man living in istanbul for education so sometimes look to this photos and try to decrease my longing to amasya:)
i read your comment and want to say something...
the monument is about "the amasya circular"(is it the true word for genelge in turkish)...genelge was the first step of turkish independence war and also that time was ataturk's first came to amasya...the people you see in the monument are the men that with ataturk during the war...refet bele, rauf orbay, kazým karabekir, ali fuat cebesoy, etc. maybe you remember the names from the book...
front side you can see two men with religious dress...the man at left side(the photo's) is abdurrahman kamil(yetkin) efendi the religious leader(müftü in turkish) of amasya;and the man at right side is the former müftü and preacher of the sultan beyazýd II...they were the first men to oppose the ottoman empire...so that move was very helpful to people's look to the ataturk and his struggle...
that's it for now...surely there are too many things to say for the monument, the struggle, amasya and your photos btu i wrote much and giving you a headache :)
thanks for all this again...with peace...
