A notice explains: An incident that occurred at the beginning of the French occupation caused the people of Antep to lose their patience and caused a huge reaction against the French. This was the Martyr Kamil incident that took place on January 21, 1920. While Mehmet Kamil was passing by the military bakery on İnönü Street with his mother, three French soldiers tried to tease his mother and open her veil. Thereupon, Mehmet Kamil picked up a stone from the ground to defend his mother and attacked the soldiers and was bayoneted to death there. The soldiers were able to escape by taking shelter in the bakery when the Turks nearby rushed to his mother's cries. This incident exploded like a bomb in the city. Martyr Kamil's funeral was held on January 22 1920 with a huge ceremony; the shops were closed and the funeral ceremony turned into a show of intimidation against the French. Although the French Commander Sainte-Marie offered his condolences to Kamil's father, Ökkeş Efendi, and wanted to give him 200 gold coins, Ökkeş Efendi did not accept. The anger and excitement caused by this incident did not subside for days, and the pain of Martyr Kamil plunged all of Antep into mourning.
