Colossal head of a goddess, Roman, second century AD, from Smyrna (Izmir). The goddess has an oval and fleshy face. The lips are strong and with grooves. On the middle part of the upper lip a lump - almost as if swollen - is seen. Her lower lip is larger. Het eyes are carefully worked with deep cuts. The front part of the hair is arranged in large curls. A headband is bound over het hair twice horizontally and then once more vertically. At the back the hair falls below the neck in softer girls. This is one of the type known under the name of "Sappho" or more commonly Aphrodite. H 90 cm. Inv. 358
