When I was 16 I joined an amateur-photographers club. We'd discuss slides taken by its members, boring, boring, boring (what aperture/film/tripod did you use). My main purpose was to have a darkroom at my disposal.
Nowadays, 60+ years hence, I often meet groups of fellow-amateurs who roam a neighbourhood for that one particular shot. Not my cup of tea, but I hope some of them will get a fine hobby for life out of it.
