2444-Kutahya-Arch-Mus-3729-1002.jpg

One of some Phrygian votive stelae, set up in the 2nd – 3rd century AD as part of an act of thanks or entreaty. They are from the village of Kurudere near Emirdağ (Afyon province) and the village of Pınarcık in Kütahya province. They record the names of local gods that were assimilated to the cult of Zeus but originally indicated a specific function (protecting certain crops or spots) or a place-name. More in general the gods dealt with health problems or other issues. Body parts or work-related objects and even people may be present.
