This is the Lise Çeşmesi (Fountain of the Highschool), also named ‘Şefika Hanım Çeşmesi’ (Fountain of Lady Şefika). It was built on initiative of this Şefika Hanım in 1919-1921, displaying a late-Ottoman style related to European 19th century classicism, in order to fit in with the nearby late-19th century ‘Lise’.
In addition to providing drinking water, fountains were used for decoration and to celebrate their builders, which were generally high state officials or simply wealthy people, whose name would be mentioned in the foundation inscription on the ‘kitâbe’ (= building inscription - here: on the white marble stone above the tap).
