Theatre fountain. The theatre fountain is located within a vaulted niche of 11,85 m inserted into the supporting wall of the theatre (analemma). The fountain without a doubt not only served the audience of the theatre but also the dense human traffic strolling on the upper terrace where the monumental public buildings of the city are located. Dated to the 4th century BC and covering an area of 10,6 x 6 m this monumental fountain has a very special design In Π-form, in between its side walls, two columns are located in-antis. Pools extending ion front of the side and back walls leave a court in the centre. Water channeled first to a channel located high up inside the back wall is directed to five gutters, from where it sprinkles to five corresponding openings on the platform. In this way reaching a lower canal, it is then directed to the six gutters – two on each wall – that pour into the fountain. Square openings above each of the gutters on the side walls facilitate maintenance of the canals.
