Taste and democracy, 2004

This work was influenced by the artist's experience of being nominated for and subsequently winning the Turner Prize in 2003. The prize is celebrated and widely publicised in the United Kingdom and generates widespread discourse within the general public. It is the comments of the public that Perry has explored in this pot. Set in the backdrop of a traditional painterly landscape, phrases and statements about Perry winning that were featured in the media are depicted coming out of the mouths of a wide range of people, including his friends, celebrities and critics. The comments range from the disparaging to the tender and funny.
