The stele for Antiochius and Hercules, Roman Period, basalt, from Zeugma.
During salvage excavations carried out at the north of the Hellenistic Agora of the ancient city of Zeugma in 2000 a basalt stele was brought to light. On one side Kommagene King Antiochus I shakes the hand of Apollo-Mithras-Helios (dexiosis), a lot of gods rolled into one. Later another stele belonging to the same sanctuary was unearthed. There Kommagene King Antiochus I shakes the hand of Hercules. Both steles have inscriptions concerning the politics of combining Greek and Persian deities over the lands ruled by Antiochus. They refer to the rules to be obeyed at the sanctuaries.
