A hackney - or phaedon, which seems to be the preferred term. Later you will see more of them. I did not envy the horses that have to run up quite steep inclines, and of course it is mainly the less slender visitor who makes use of this transport. I just read the phrase "horizontally challenged" for that kind of traveller.
