Lekythos. A single handled, narrow necked perfume and oil container. A new area of use was determined for the lekythos in Attica in the mid 5th century BC. It was laid inside the graves of the deceased. Especially white-grounded lethykos were produced in large numbers between 440-430 BC. The manufacture of lethykos vases continued until 390 BC. The “red figure” technique was a noverlty deployed on the lethykos. The type called “squat lethykos” were produced some time between the second half of the 5th century and the 4th century.
