One of many pictures of the Hadrian's Gate. Hadrian visited the city in 130 AD together with his wife Sabine, in their honour this three-arched "gate" was erected. Hadrian made certain the town got a sound defensive system and turned it and the surrounding area into a province.

On the picture: The vaults of the gate are a fine example of Roman coffering.

A ‘coffer’ is a sunken panel in the shape of a square, rectangle, or octagon in a ceiling, soffit or vault. A series of these sunken panels were used as decoration for a ceiling or a vault, also called ‘caissons’ (boxes), or ‘lacunaria’ (spaces, openings).
