The Araptar incident.
To end insurgencies in Maraş the French sent 450 men on January 12th, 1920, from Antep. Arriving in a village, Araptar, they misbehaved, protesting citizens fled into the mountains, there attracting people from other villages. The French fired on the gathered crowd, then were fired upon themselves. A commission later concluded the French were to blame.
