On the picture: Commemorative plate of Atatürk’s first visit to Amasya (June 1919). At the time, he was still named ‘Mustafa Kemal Paşa’. He came from Havza, by car. Head of the reception committee was Hacı Hafiz Tevfik Efendi, Amasya’s ‘müftü’ (= Sunni Islamic scholar who is an interpreter or expounder of Islamic law).
