This is the Atif Efendi Library. Atif Efendi was a defterdar, the head official of a provincial treasury. He had this library built in 1741, architect unknown. At the entrance of the building there are three residences reserved for the personnel. A vaulted passage, above which the residences are located, leads you to the courtyard. The library building, at the west side of the courtyard, has a unique architecture. Its basement was raised 1,5 meters from the ground and left empty in order to prevent damp, which would be a threat to the manuscripts. The arches are covered with bricks and stones on the ground level. On the upper floor there is a domed reading room and offices, storage. The reading room is rectangular and contains three spaces for readers' use. They enable users to profit from sunlight entering the room.
