The avlu or monumental courtyard of the mosque. It is bordered by 20 columns, forming a portico which is covered with 24 small domes. The Şadıvan (litt. "free-flowing fountain") or ablutions fountain is considered “one of the finest of its kind” by the Strolling through Istanbul guide. Actual ablutions are done mostly outside from water-taps along the south wall.
