A text explains that the Sarcophagus of Heracles was discovered in illegal excavations in the 1960’s in the necropolis of the ancient city of Perge, and was illegally taken out of the country. After being restored in England, on its was to Switzerland in 2010, during an inventory control conducted by the officials of the Federal Customs Administration of Switzerland at the Geneva Freeport, the sarcophagus in transit was seized for being in contravention of Swiss Law, and an inquiry was initiated by the Office of the Attorney General of Geneva.
In 20911 the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism was informed through the Swiss authorities, and upon understanding that this sarcophagus originated from Turkey from the scientific remarks provided by the archaeologists specialized in this matter, the required initiatives were made by the Office of the Chief Public Prosecutor of Antalya to undertake an inquiry. After proper legal procedures the decision of restitution became definite on 2nd of May 2016.
The sarcophagus depicts the labours of Heracles (Hercules), it is dated in the 2nd century AD. It belongs to the Torre Nova type, within the group of Asia Minor Sarcophagi. After a display of three months at the University of Geneva it arrived “home” on September 13th 2017.
I thought it was a beauty, though at one side grave robbers (my interpretation) cut through the statues to get in, the repair if that is what the piece of stone now in place is, is a pity. In the current display it is hard to see all sides properly, so my pictures were in some cases taken from awkward angles. I hope that is changed in the future. At the foot of the sarcophagus rose petals had been strewn, suggesting an ancient burial ceremony, I guess.
