At the Dardanelles, the straits opening (or closing) the Marmara Sea, thus the sea road to Istanbul. Fierce fighting took place along the coast here during the First World War, and Atatürk earned his fame resisting the Allied Armies. The city has a good museum with finds from Troy. I added a separate gallery with pictures from that city. I have visited the twon several times (for some reason often in winter). It is a fine town to stay, and then to cross (from Asia to Europe) by ferry and walk in the hills. There is a gallery for the north side of the straits, with an impressive fortress, casemates and a landscape well suited to hikes.

Marmara Denizi’ne açılan Çanakkale Boğazı, İstanbul’a giden deniz yolunu oluşturuyor. I. Dünya Savaşında en şiddetli çarpışma bu kıyıda yaşandı, Atatürk de İtilaf Ordularý’na karşı direnişi sonucunda sahip olduğu ünü burada kazandı. Şehirde, Truva buluntularını da içeren bir müze var. Feribotla karşıya geçmeyi (Asya’dan Avrupa’ya) ve tepelerde yürümeyi seviyorum.

Bende şehrin ve Truva’nın daha eski resimleri de var, onları daha sonra ekleyeceğim.

i am a kenyan and i have been to many parts of turkey. i am so happy to see these photos because they reminded me of the good time i had in canakkale i even have a photo below the statue of the strong soldier holding the bomb. turkey is wonderful and insaalah i would love to visit it again and again.thank you. .

Dear Dick Osseman, Thanks so much for the pictures of ÇANAKKALE. My father grew up there and left his family to come to the United States about 1915. He used to "glow" when he talked of his childhood there and how he missed his large family. He talked often of how he played ball there as a child and the coffee house where people sat and talked. He said his family owned a tavern there but that's all I remember. Even though it was a long time ago, I thank you again as it gave me a chance to see some of the beautiful city he grew up in. I am Dutch, my English is very good, my French and German decent, my Italian is good, my Spanish poor, my Turkish a struggle. I can understand some texts, and then again some other texts not at all. I hope to change this, but do not have the necessary time. I can explain some things in Turkish, but not have a good discussion. The Turkish texts on my site are almost all by a teacher in Istanbul that I know. Or by people writing comments.

My mother was born in Canakkale in 1904 and she often spoke fondly of it. Thank you for posting these pictures so I could get at least a glimpse of her city. I hope to get to Turkey one day to visit both Canakkale and Edirne, my father's birthplace.

Richard, You are right. I gave the pictures titles long ago, and they were a series, with Canakkale as the place where I stayed. If you read the captions consecutively you will find I explain, but indeed just looking at a page with thumbnails you may get a wrong impression. For technical reasons I prefer to keep the old names (has to do with my filing system). Dick

Dear Sir, I know the correct name for the battles in 1915 is the Canak Wars but surely some of your photos could of been title Eceabat and Gelibolu. Am I right in saying this is the Gelibulo peninsular or am I totally wrong. I am shortly going there for my 10th visit and I have many splendid friends who live in Eceabat. Unfortunatelly, I was unable to take pics but I video taped such a beautiful place. I lived in Adana and visited istanbul. Dick - Loved the pic's. Never been there but would love to. There's a good WW! book called "Dardnelles Patrol" I think. A UK sub penetrated the straits, entered the Marmara sea and raised havoc with the German Navy. Good reading and gives you a good perspective on that part of the Mediterranean.

Zey, I've been to Turkey twice (Istanbul and Adana) but I havent visited canakkale yet, Im very eager to see this magnificent place. Photos are so nice but I couldn't see about Gallipoly wars..Çanakkale's importance is the memoir of Gallipoly wars..And also has a big historical importance for New Zerland,Austalian,English,Friench,Senegal,Ýndian people..All these nationalities are sleeping eith theit Türkish brothers...Thank you..
