A short bus ride by frequent dolmuş from Milas, there is Beçin. In the Middle Ages the city was mentioned as “Pezona” in Italian sources and as “Berçin” or “Peçin” in Turkish-Islamic texts. Archaeological evidence indicates its history goes back to 2000 BC. Turkish rule started in this region in the 13th century, and Milas became the capital of the Menteşe Emirate. In the beginning of the 14th century the administrative centre was moved to Beçin. After the death of Ahmed Gazi in 1391 the capital was moved to Balat.
The remains of the Inner Castle, the Ahmed Gazi medrese (Qu’ran School), the Great Bath, the Kızıl Han and the Yelli Mosque are amongst the things I show. We first head to the castle, which you see from afar.
