Alaca Kümbet

Built in the 12th century for Emir Cemalettin. A hexagonal pyramidal roof tops a square building. It sits on an island in a busy thoroughfare.

According to the latest studies (2006) this mausoleum was probably built in 1184-1190, when Kayseri was under Rûm Seljuk rule. That is the date given by the building inscription, placed above one of the western windows. It also states the monument was built for Emir Sadrettin Ömer bin Celaleddin Muhammed. It is not decorated, except for the entrance door and the windows. Unlike most Seljuk-type tombs, this Kümbet has no ‘mumyalık’ (cellar, burial room).
