Cockspur Island Lighthouse - view from our boat during Captain Mike's Dolphin Excursion - Tybee Island

The Cockspur Island Lighthouse was built in 1856. It was used for navigational purposes until 1909 to mark the entrance to the southern channel of the Savannah River. After 1909 the lighthouse was not needed because the southern channel of Savannah River rarely was used. The deeper and wider northern channel of the river was more frequently used.
The lighthouse is part of the Fort Pulaski National Monument. A trail from Fort Pulaski comes very close to the islet where the lighthouse is located.
We saw dolphins on this excursion but they were difficult to photograph.
