Parking area for bikes on Nishiki-dori (street) not far from Nishiki Market in Kyoto

Nishiki Market is a covered, five block shopping street and a continuation of Nishiki-dori. The Market is known as "Kyoto's Kitchen" because it has about 130 shops and stalls emphasizing food and cooking products, such as seafood, vegetables, fruits and cookware. Most of Kyoto's specialty foods are sold here. Almost everything for sale is locally produced or gathered.
The Market started as a wholesale fish market in the early 1300's. For the last 400 years it has expanded to a more general retail food market. It is not unusual for a shop to be owned and operated by the same family for generations.
