Centuries old plates in the Kutani style - seen at the Nomi Kutani Ceramics Museum in the Kutani Pottery Village in Nomi-shi

Gold leaf was used in the creation of the beautiful Kutani plate on the right. (Gold leaf is in front of that plate.)
Kutani pottery has its origins in the 1600's and has gone through various phases since that time. All the phases seem to be characterized by dynamic colors, and rich designs and images.
This museum also is known as the Kutani Archive Center. It opened in 1982 and houses many masterpieces of Kutani pottery from the Edo Period to the modern day. There are also exhibits on the history of the production processes and the brushwork techniques involved in creating the pottery.
Some of the facilities at the Kutani Pottery Village are two Kutani pottery museums, a facility to learn how to create and paint pottery and 13 stores where Kutani pottery is sold.
