Morning Market next to the Miyagawa River in Takayama

The Morning Market in Takayama is one of the largest such markets in Japan with up to 60 stalls. The Market extends on one side of the Miyagawa River from the Kajibashi Bridge to the Yayoibashi Bridge. Sold in stalls on the river side of the market are fruits, vegetables, spices and plants. Sold in stalls (some shops) on the other side of the market are crafts, food items, such as candy, natural ingredients for use as supplements or as treatments for medical conditions, clothing and souvenirs, such as sarubobo dolls.
Takayama is surrounded by mountains and has an old world feel. It was a big supplier of timber during the Edo Period, the feudal period from the early 1600’s to mid 1800’s when the town was under shogunate control.
Takayama is located in the mountainous Hida region. The town often is referred to as Hida-Takayama to distinguish it from other places named Takayama.
