This is one of the best examples of a castle near Tokyo.
Castles were used as military storngholds by the Japanese - they were built with wood and stone. This castle dates from the 1400's when it was involved in various clan wars until the Meji Restoration. The Meiji Restoration restored practical imperial rule to Japan in 1868 under Emperor Meiji. The ascension of Emperor Meji meant the end of the military, feudal dictatorship and the shogunate in Japan. In the 1900's the castle's stone base was repaired and the building was reconstructed.
