Windsor Ruins - remains of a pre-Civil War mansion - off a back road in Port Gibson, Claiborne County - southern Mississippi

This is the most photographed historic site in Mississippi - the ruins of the largest pre-Civil War Greek Revival mansion in Mississippi. It was built in the late 1850's-early 1860's by slaves on a 2600 acre plantation. The guy who built it lived in it for only a few weeks before he died. During the Civil War, the mansion was used by the Confederacy as an observation post and to send signals from its cupola across the Mississippi River to Louisiana. When Union soldiers eventually occupied this area they did not destroy the mansion because they used it as a hospital. In 1890 the mansion caught fire from a guest's cigar resulting in the destruction of the mansion except for the 26 columns seen here and iron stairs. This site has been used in numerous motion pictures.
